Haystack Rock in Pacific City

Fast forward to 2021. I’ve had two major back surgeries, lost my clientele to Covid and made a major life change to Oregon to a small beach town with one of the famous Haystack Rocks offshore. With my change in lifestyle I will be blogging more to catch up on life in general. My approach will be helter skelter but at some point will make sense. The bottom line will be about the images and the art.

Equipment: Nikon Z6II, 14mm, 28-300 and an Apple iPhone 11

Where are You?

Everyone has a special place.  I think mine is Ketchikan, Alaska.  I change my mind quite often.  Sometimes it’s Kauai, other times New Orleans but for now it’s Ketchikan.  I was introduced to the area by my great friend Charley Starr.  Charley moved his family and photo business there 10 years ago.  It is a small seaside city, population over 13,000 and is dependent on the cruise ship industry to survive and thrive.   Charley has generously hosted me on four visits and on the fifth I finally brought Patti, my wife.  The geography is unlike anything here in San Diego.  We were able to see waterfalls, bears, eagles and the salmon were running.  I wish I was a better writer so I could describe the area and community.  Wherever we went Charley was greeted and the people were pleasantly friendly to us strangers.  I’ve started to remember names and now know places to go.  It’s truly a small town environment with a Walmart.  I can’t wait to go back.  Where is your special place?

To Tour or not to Tour…

 That is the question……
This is the good and bad of being stuck on a tour bus.  Patti Zwink and I went to Cuba.  We decided we wanted to see Cuba before it was “Americanized” and for a first trip a tour would be the best way to see the country.  Over the next few day’s I’ll share what we saw, a mere glimpse.  This is from the first day of being in country.
Images shot with an iPhone 6+ and a Nikon D810 with a 24-70 lens.

Is it Art, Pt.2?

I wrote this post a little over a year ago on a different site.  I have spent a lot of time since then thinking about the topic and then expanding it to what is photography?  I’ll let you savor on the post for a couple days and then I’ll share some thoughts.

I was in SF last week on an extensive corporate photo shoot for Swinerton.  When I was leaving I decided to take the Treasure Island exit on the way back to the airport.  The last time I was on TI was in 1975 when it was a Navy Base and I was a naive young seaman in Electronic Warfare school.  So many memories……  I first decided to do a quick photo shoot of the skyline which was etched in my memory.  I first shot it with my Nikon D3 and then decided to try my iPhone on Hipstamatic mode.  Ugh…… it looked as flat and hazy as the skyline.  So then I opened my new favorite app. Snapseed.  With a few adjustments and then a frame adjustment the above photo is what I ended up with.  I know, it looks grainy and it does.  But, the end result is that I’m going to print it on watercolor on my Epson inkjet printer.  A few years ago I did a similar series that I printed on the watercolor paper and it looked great.  Now, we’ll find out how IPhone photos hold up.

If it Keep on Raining’, the Levee Gonna Break

The levee. Holy Cross, in the Lower 9th Ward.I just spent a week and a half on vacation. While in New Orleans I spent some quality time with former co-worker and now fellow blogger Ray Laskowitz. He shared with us a lot of the history of New Orleans and his Katrina experience. If you like New Orleans or are interested in the devastation from Katrina check out his blog.

On The Road…Again

I’m no expert but it appears the economy is improving.  The first two months of 2014 were the busiest I’ve ever had.  I know it’s a small sample to base the year on but other photographers have told me they’re off to a good start also.  If photographers are working, businesses are marketing and looking to growth.  That’s what we do, we help our client market, sell and grow their business.

I spent a lot of the month on the road.  Several trips to Orange County surrounded a couple San Diego projects and then I went to the Bay Area for a couple shoots up there.  After a quick respite back home and starting a new local project, I went to Alaska for a quick shoot.  I know, why send a San Diego photographer there, it’s because my client trusts me to get what they need.  Maybe an idea for a future blog.

Well I need to wrap this up.  I have another couple projects in Orange County and LA this week.  I hope everyone else is busy.

About my image gallery:  All images shot with my iPhone while traveling.  Post was in Snapseed.

Take the Road less Traveled

I was coming home from a two day job in Santa Maria the other day by myself.  It’s a 300 mile drive.  One thing you quickly notice is not only how tired you get but also how beautiful and different the area is than southern California.  My original intent was to drive straight through.  Counting LA traffic nearly a 6 hour drive.

Then something wonderful happened.  I remember seeing an old steel structured bridge spanning a valley along the coast near Gaviotas.  So, I decided to become an explorer and see what surprised awaited.  A short drive down a narrow winding road opened up and I found myself at the Gaviotos State Beach parking lot and the structure I had seen the other day.  An added treat was that right between the iron and steel beams was a pathway to an empty beach.

After shooting for a half hour and enjoying my new found subject I remembered I still had a long trek home.  I reluctantly left but content with my discovery, refreshed to continue the drive and the desire to look for new places to explore.

techy stuff:  Iphone5, capture in Hipstamatic app and processed in Snapseed.

I C U……..

What a stupid title……  This is my first post in this blog.  I have another cool blog (at least I think it is) that is a little more serious look at how photography interacts with my life.  I have used my Iphone regularly since they first came out.

I love to shoot, to capture life around me.  Everywhere I turn I see photos ready to be shot or created (a big difference).  I want to use this to showcase some of my more interesting images shot in different situations.  Some I’ll explain and some will have to speak for themselves.  Hope you enjoy.
